WORSHIP AT ASCENSION
Worship at Ascension includes ancient hymns as well as current worship music. The Pastor compliments sermons with pictures or video using the LCD projector. Some weeks we use the full, traditional Lutheran liturgy and other weeks our worship is based upon a theme, where the songs, prayers and sermon reflect a particular focus and the music is contemporary. Music is an important piece of Ascension’s worship and often the chancel choir or bell choir present music.
In general, worship at Ascension follows a four-part pattern that is common in many Lutheran churches.
First, we Gather. Typically, the Pastor greets and welcomes the congregation, we follow an order confession and forgiveness, sing, and pray the prayer of the day.
The next portion of worship is the Word. We listen to the Word of God as it is read aloud from Scripture, preached by the Pastor, and sung in a song.
The third movement of worship is the Meal. In this portion of the worship service, we celebrate Communion. We recall the story of Jesus’ last supper and then receive bread and wine, the food that Jesus shared with his disciples. All are welcome at Jesus’ meal.
The final part of worship is the Sending. Perhaps the briefest portion of the service, the Pastor blesses the congregation, we sing, and the assisting minister sends the congregation to “Go in peace, serve the Lord.”
